In search of the perfect jacket

I have been searching and searching and searching for the perfect suit jacket. It should be fitted - it's got to be big on the bust and small on the waist. It should have a peplum. Art Deco detailing would be a plus. Any colour is fine. Solanah's is simply fabulous. This Mitzi Morgan would be perfect if it were a few sizes bigger. Wish this Lilli Ann were affordable. This Lilli Ann is also stunning but so far out of my price range it's not even funny. So tempted by this Freiss even though it's a bit too small. Love the big collar on this one, shame about the teeny bust measurement... Seriously though, how hard can it be??

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Every family has their own Christmas traditions. Mummy's house breaks out in a rash of miniature red crochet horses (which, having been around for approximately as long as I have, could probably officially be classified "vintage"!), Julenisse (Norwegian Christmas Elf) decorative porcelain, and mistletoe. And there's always a Christmas walk. Which was all the more fun because this year, for the first time I can remember, we had an actual, real-life White Christmas (it rarely snows in December in the south - normally only in January or February). V exciting!

Snowy garden! Mummy gave me this vintage fur coat to sell, but it's soooo warm and cosy, and although fundamentally I am of course anti-fur, I don't think vintage fur can be considered unethical.

Merry Christmas!

Christmas Day Outfit

New dress - 1940s forest green wool gabardine number I got from etsy. The style is so perfect for me - the gathered shelf bust allows it to fit snugly on the waist, but still have plenty of room in the top. The adorable vintage whimsy hat (can't see it very well - it's constructed of red netting with velvety buds and leaves, finished with a velvet bow) came from Ebay seller Madhatterrus - love how versatile it is - it can be worn as a hat, or turn it round and it's more of a fascinator, which is how I had it for Christmas.

Christmas Eve

Christmas eve dress - 1950s fitted shift dress (still not fitted enough on the waist, hence the belt) in Christmassy green, black and red plaid, with a red ribbon rosette decoration. Vintage 1950s-60s long string of plastic rosebud beads. Wool beret with bow from Accessorize. The outfit really calls for elbow-length red gloves, but I don't have any, so black short gloves will have to do. Mince Pies with homemade pear mincemeat (pears from mother's garden) by my domestic goddess sister.

Pickled Punks Vintage Bazaar Totnes

Naomi and Jo of Pickled Punk Events invited me to take a stall at their Vintage Bazaar, so Matin and I took a weekend in Devon to attend. It being the West Country, we got to drive through villages with such evocative names as Puddletown Forest and Berry Pomeroy. I enjoyed it, though we didn't take very much money, but it was a learning experience - it was my first time to hold a stall of my own, and Naomi & Jo's first time to organise an event. There were cupcakes, and a transvestite in hot pink stockings, a corset and angel wings, playing Christmas carols on a ukelele. And I picked up a fab 50s style full-skirted peasant dress in bright red with broderie anglaise trim for £1!

Vintage Figures

I accidentally bought yet another dress. In my defence, a) it's wool and has sleeves, so good for winter, and b) it's so hard to resist when clothes come up in my fit! With my measurements it's very hard to find modern clothes to suit my hourglass shape - clothes that fit my bust and hips are invariably far too big on the waist, and make me look awful. Various factors, principally diet, lifestyle and lighter foundation garments, women have much higher waist-hip ratios (meaning a straighter figure) than 60 years ago, and this is reflected in modern sizing. Vintage-style brands such as What Katie Did base their sizing on vintage sizing, and define a vintage figure as "one with a waist measurement 10 inches or more smaller than the hips". As 1940s-50s - the period epitomised by Dior's New Look - is hands down my favourite fashion era, it works out great for me that I was obviously designed to wear vintage clothing from this time!

Confessions of a Spendthrift

I accidentally bought...
  • A 1940s tweed suit
  • A 1950s black velvet dress
  • 3 pairs of vintage gloves
  • Several cards of 1940s hair slides
  • A 1950s cocktail dress
  • Another 1950s cocktail dress with peek-a-boo lace yoke
  • A 1940s black wool and satin jacket

In my defence probably not all of it will fit me, so it'll go up for resale.

Pin me up buttercup

I looove the vintage pin-up look! I'm quite tempted to ask for an Hourglass pin-up photoshoot for myself for Christmas. Am I too old to try to get into pin-up modelling? Fleur de Guerre (who I saw at Goodwood Revival but I was too shy to go and talk to her!) has written a helpful guide on the subject....

I haven't a thing to wear!

I need more clothes! Of course every gal always needs more clothes, but I really really do! I have a grand total of maybe five outfits, and half of them aren't really cold-weather-friendly. So basically I have two outfits. I'm seriously in need of some long sleeves - why do so few vintage dresses have long sleeves? I did order one long-sleeved green 40s dress from etsy, and I'm impatient for it to arrive.

Free Fifties Font Giveaway #2!

Aaaand it's finished! Uppercase and lowercase full character set - that's 52 graphics! There's even 8 seasonal Santa dings for the holidays. And it's free to readers - just post a comment below (don't forget to include a link to your webpage so I can check you out too!)

Dress of the day

Actually it's technically dress of yesterday, since that's when the auction ended. I just love the adorably whimsical print on this 2-piece dress, so sad it wasn't my size, or I would have bid for sure, but once you factor in the postage, I couldn't justify the expense for something that would need altering.

Little Black Dress

I didn't mean to keep the dresses and shoes I brought back from my "stock buying" trip, but somehow they just keep falling into my wardrobe! So today I'm going classic LBD.

Font in Progress

I've spent the whole day in front of my computer, totally not doing any work at all, but creating my second retro dingbat font! It's still a work in progress - I have the whole uppercase completed, just lowercase to go. Here's a taster of some of my favourite dings so far...

1940s Suit

Officially in love with this amazing vintage 1940s suit from Mill Street Vintage - how can you even resist the polka dot trims! Way out of my price range unfortunately, but I've saved all the pictures, and next time I'm in Thailand or Vietnam I'm definitely going to get myself a copy made (check back in Feb for photos!)

Birthday Cocktail Party Outfit

We had a retro cocktail party (pina coladas, harvey wallbangers, novelty shaped ice cubes, cheese-and-pineapple-on-sticks et al). It was fabulous.

  • Vintage polyester crepe peplum jacket from ebay - love the sequin detail on the shoulders, and the ruched gathering. V flattering.

  • Trusty staple: Black satin pencil skirt from Coast, many seasons ago.

  • Vintage fully-fashioned stockings, as always.

  • Irregular Choice Robot Shoes. Every girl ought to own at least one pair of Irregular Choice shoes.

Happy Birthday to Me

I have the best boyfriend ever! Matin took me shopping in Brighton for my birthday treat. Brighton's great for shopping, lots of vintage stores, antiques emporia and independent boutiques. Spotted these fabulous retro navy blue shoes (been looking for a pair of navy blue shoes to wear with all my navy blue dresses) with Art Deco styling. Tried them on, loved them, and Matin bought them for my birthday present! First shop we went in - easiest shopping trip ever! And they completed my outfit perfectly.

Today's reason to say "I do", a simply divine 1930s satin and organdie Art Deco gown!

Free Fifties Font Giveaway!

I've just finished creating my first retro dingbat font! The first of a series I'm planning (all from scans of 1940s and 50s magazines and ephemera), this one's called Copenhagen, because most of the graphics are from a 1959 tourist guide map of Copenhagen. And I'm giving it away freeee, all you have to do is link to me from your blog, twitter, or website, then post a comment on this post, and I will email you the font!

(The original map - aren't the graphics just adorable?!)
