Now, I have been cautioned against encouraging the destruction of perfectly good vintage items, so I feel I ought to add that I don't condone chopping up prized albums. However, this is an excellent way to recycle something which might otherwise be tossed and end up in landfill. I especially recommend using scratched, damaged or otherwise unplayable records. If you're concerned that you might be destroying something rare or collectable, run a quick search completed listings on ebay - if it's good, it will fetch high prices.
You will need:
- 3 12" vinyl records (or 2 records and some heavyweight card or mountboard)
- Stanley knife & steel ruler
- Pair of purse handles (mine are from Overspill on Etsy)
- Length of ribbon (optional)
- Fabric (about 1/2 a metre will do it)
- Cardstock (2-3 sheets of 12x12")
- Spray adhesive
- A good, strong craft glue (a glue gun might work, but test it on an offcut first as I don't know whether the hot glue will affect the vinyl)
- Sewing machine (or needle & thread - there isn't too much sewing involved)
This is brilliant! Thank-you! I used to have a tutorial for this years ago but never ended up making one and have since lost it. I've a few records I picked up because I thought the covers were amusing, so maybe I can do this with one of those.

ReplyDeleteI am sad it's gone since it was a fab tutorial, I had bookmarked when first up and now today I finally got the matching records I had my <3 set on, gone. I also live in NZ and am a student so would only ever be something I would make myself or buy local (shipping is not always gentle when going that far!)

Love the blog, and unsure why I have such a strong reaction about this actually!
As many people correctly guessed, I've temporarily removed the tutorial from my site out of concern that others would start commercially making record bags from my design - I don't want to open "Country Living" and find someone taking credit for my idea and profiting from it. I've no wish to withhold the tutorial from genuine personal crafters who want to make a bag for themselves or as a gift, so I'm trying to get my head around a way to make it available again with that caveat.

I bet this bag looks amazing paired with a little black dress! It can definitely give the look a more cool and chic feel and tone it down a bit. Will try to make one, though I'm pretty awful at crafting :(

So free readers can see some of your full tutorials and paid members can get access to other great tutorials. Also, if you have mastered the skill of finding a market for your crafts, you can also offer tutorials to higher paid members on how to market their craft.
