Now, I have been cautioned against encouraging the destruction of perfectly good vintage items, so I feel I ought to add that I don't condone chopping up prized albums. However, this is an excellent way to recycle something which might otherwise be tossed and end up in landfill. I especially recommend using scratched, damaged or otherwise unplayable records. If you're concerned that you might be destroying something rare or collectable, run a quick search completed listings on ebay - if it's good, it will fetch high prices.
You will need:
- 3 12" vinyl records (or 2 records and some heavyweight card or mountboard)
- Stanley knife & steel ruler
- Pair of purse handles (mine are from Overspill on Etsy)
- Length of ribbon (optional)
- Fabric (about 1/2 a metre will do it)
- Cardstock (2-3 sheets of 12x12")
- Spray adhesive
- A good, strong craft glue (a glue gun might work, but test it on an offcut first as I don't know whether the hot glue will affect the vinyl)
- Sewing machine (or needle & thread - there isn't too much sewing involved)
This is brilliant! Thank-you! I used to have a tutorial for this years ago but never ended up making one and have since lost it. I've a few records I picked up because I thought the covers were amusing, so maybe I can do this with one of those.

ReplyDeleteNow I know what I'm hunting for this weekend when I hit the thrift shops! hehe. Or just raid my record collection for the few duds I've picked up over the years. ;) Beautiful purse--and thank you so much for sharing the how-to with us! :)

ReplyDeleteThanks for the preface. Great tutorial.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous :) All the best for your move to Etsy too!
ReplyDeleteyou're amazing!
ReplyDeleteawesome!! such a great idea!
ReplyDeleteAmazing, thank you so much ♥
ReplyDeleteYa know? That is darned cute! I could see that as a really cute purse even if you didn't have old vinyls and just had to use some other stiff medium. I love the way it's put together. Very neat.
ReplyDeleteI love this! i actually made one today, it currently outside drying, thanks for such a great tutorial!
ReplyDeleteI can only see the supply list, am I doing something wrong? Or has the tutorial been removed?
ReplyDeleteI'm having the same problem. I only see the supply list...
ReplyDeleteI can't see it either :(
ReplyDeleteI have the same problem as well :(
ReplyDeleteHi I would love to see the tutorial also can you please repost it? Or tell me where to find it? :)
ReplyDeleteWhere's the actual tutoriual? All I see is "what you'll need".
ReplyDeleteSame problem, can't see anything but two pictures and a need list.
ReplyDeleteI was quite looking forward to make one.
It would be great to have the tutorial. I also just see the list and 2 pictures. ;)
ReplyDeletePretty please may we see this awesome tute- Promise we'll be good!
ReplyDeletei think she removed it
ReplyDeleteNo prizes for guessing why, I can only say that I think anyone that *really* wants to make this will figure it out..........at least I hope so.
ReplyDeleteI am sad it's gone since it was a fab tutorial, I had bookmarked when first up and now today I finally got the matching records I had my <3 set on, gone. I also live in NZ and am a student so would only ever be something I would make myself or buy local (shipping is not always gentle when going that far!)
Hurumpf. Interwebs made me sad :(
Love the blog, and unsure why I have such a strong reaction about this actually!
As many people correctly guessed, I've temporarily removed the tutorial from my site out of concern that others would start commercially making record bags from my design - I don't want to open "Country Living" and find someone taking credit for my idea and profiting from it. I've no wish to withhold the tutorial from genuine personal crafters who want to make a bag for themselves or as a gift, so I'm trying to get my head around a way to make it available again with that caveat.

is there anyway you could email it privately for those of us who are "gift makers"? i want to make this for my bff for her graduation!!
DeleteWe all understand. I hope you can make it available again soon. I found another website showing a record purse design but I preferred the look of yours.
ReplyDeleteOh no! I bookmarked this page to make one for my mum for her birthday and gathered the materials. I sat down and opened up the bookmark to get started.... Darn it!
ReplyDeleteOh, NO! This is supposed to be a Christmas prezzie for my BFF (yes, it is late-- she understands) and now the tutorial is gone! Is there a way those of us who want to make them can buy the tutorial from you? Can we pinky-swear not to sell them commercially? Or maybe you can offer the tutorial to people for a cut of their sales if they do sell them commercially?
ReplyDeleteRight, off to try to figure it out for myself so my BFF won't be disappointed-- I chose record albums with special meaning for her and she is dying to get her hands on her fancy new purse!
Thanks for the inspiration!
I bet this bag looks amazing paired with a little black dress! It can definitely give the look a more cool and chic feel and tone it down a bit. Will try to make one, though I'm pretty awful at crafting :(
ReplyDeleteHi Charlotte I'd say by the demand here you have an opportunity to offer a paid membership area of your blog. So free readers can see some of your full tutorials and paid members can get access to other great tutorials. Also, if you have mastered the skill of finding a market for your crafts, you can also offer tutorials to higher paid members on how to market their craft.
ReplyDeleteThis is something I help people do all the time so you can leverage your great skills and teaching ability to make a business through your blog.
Could you please possibly e-mail this tutorial to me? I promise I will not make it to sell. My sister and I have some old records we would like to turn into purses!
ReplyDeletePlease comment back on my blog so I know whether or not you can e-mail it to me, and we'll go from there.
Brigid
If you'd like me to email you the tutorial you'll need to let me know your email address.
