Romany Romance

Yes, I'm rocking the peasant blouse once again - this time with much more of a gypsy feel, complete with crystal ball! When I wore this to the car boot sale one gentleman actually asked me if I was Romanian.

I wore my candy coloured gingham skirt sans petticoat for a more relaxed, early 50s look. Overall I went for easy, breezy summer style, leaving the blouse untied at the neckline and paring down my usual stack of bangles to just three (in vanilla, pink and butterscotch to tone with the colours in the skirt).

The hair style you see in the pictures wasn't actually entirely intentional, it started out a little more 'styled' at 7:30 in the morning, but relaxed somewhat over the course of the day (these photos were taken just before sunset) into a slightly Gibson girl affair.

I thought the venetian glass bead necklace with crystal ball pendant was perfect - except the length, the reason I've never worn it before. I shortened it with a tiny safety pin through two of the links. The adjustment I made was hidden under my hair. I added further gypsy touches in the carved (bone I think) rose clip-on earrings, and a pink polka dot scarf tied around my ponytail.

Gypsy blouse, New Look (yes, I bought new clothes from an actual shop! It comes in different colours too); Vintage 80s gingham skirt, charity shop; Shoes, similar in my shop; Vintage Deco-era glass necklace and carved rose clip-on earrings, found in the attic; Polka dot scarf, from a random market stall in India; Bakelite and plastic bangles, various.

PS: I also just added two more catalogue pages to yesterday's Red, white and blue post - somehow I forgot to upload them before!

  9. Oh my goodness... you look so pretty! :) The vintage gypsy/peasant style suits you so well. I can't believe that blouse is new--it looks like the many I've seen in vintage ads and patterns. Kudos for snatching it up! :)

  10. The gentleman - obviously well intended in his compliment - lacks documentation. There is no connection other than in the sonority of the names between the Romany (as in gypsy) and the Romanian people. That is not to say there aren't plenty of gypsies in Romania - as there are in many other countries - Romanian ones incidentally are not even called Romany.
Your blouse, which is very pretty and suits you well, has a gypsy vibe about it, surely. Not a hint of a Romanian peasant blouse though. Let's give to Cesar what belongs to Cesar - in this case, keep things separate. It's a hot cookie on some plates.

  11. I don't think it was particularly meant as a compliment or otherwise - I think he actually thought I was Romanian, as he seemed genuinely surprised when I assured him I was English!

And of course, my choice of title for this post wasn't really anything to do with the anecdote (I'm aware that the words Romanian and Romany are not etymologically related); just a reference to the gypsy look.

  12. I think it was me trying to be gallant and think of it as a compliment :).
At the end of the day, both Romanian folk costumes and gypsy traditional attire are absolutely stunning, if different; however you wouldn't see any one of the parties wearing the stuff of the other and by confusing them one can bring offense to both.
Anyway, that's that, none of it makes your outfit less gorgeous, so enjoy strutting around!
