Dig On For Victory

I joined my sister and brother-in-law and the smalls up at the allotment for a picnic supper and a spot of digging. Well mostly Jo dug, and I tidied. Very elegantly.

I'm in love with this hat! This is the first time I've actually worn it, though I've owned it for some months. You can't really see in the pictures, but it has an Art Deco design in different coloured felts. I reckon it's probably 30s/40s - certainly not post-50s. Several of the stylish bloggers I met over the Vintage weekend were sporting straw hats of the era and I just love the look. I also love that even though the last time I wore this skirt it was with a very similar blouse, the hat gives it a completely different look.

One of the reasons I haven't worn it before though is that I always struggle with hat-friendly hairstyling. I'm working on perfecting some hat-friendly styles for long hair - I'll let you know if I come up with anything useful!

Yes, the record bag appears again - I've carried it almost every day since I made it! I'm pleased to say it's holding up well.

  1. I've been looking for a straw hat that I can wear when I have my hair up. I'm thinking almost a flat top, so it just sits on top and ties on....is there a name for a style like that?

I've been enjoying all your posts about the history of fashion, fabrics, etc. So, informative and interesting!!!

  2. Ooh, that is indeed a lovely hat! I really never wear hats in part because I always feel a bit silly looking, and in part because of your issue-- hat friendly hair, or lack thereof. I spend enough time in the winter wearing wooly hats and ruining my hair that I think by the time summer hits, I don't want to have to go through it all again! ;)

  5. Love this--gardening attire at it's most glamorous! :) I am wishing for the day I have a little plot (or yard of any sort I can have containers in) and can dress up a bit a la 40s to do gardening. hehe! (Because obviously I have an issue and everything I do needs to be an occasion to "dress up"! lol.)

I've been carrying my record bag around a lot too! Last week I went to spend the evening at a friend's house, and both her children were utterly fascinated that I made the bag from records--so cute! :) I didn't get proper outfit pictures over the weekend as I promised, but I have it on my to-do list for today and will post about it later this week on the ol' blog! ;) Thanks again for sharing that how-to!
