Skating in the New Year

We saw the New Year in in style by going ice skating at Hampton Court Palace - having been seized with the notion late on December 31st. Isn't it a beautiful setting for an ice rink? I love ice skating! I haven't been for absolutely years, but having reminded myself (after a somewhat wobbly start, I must confess) how very fun it is it's definitely my new year's resolution to take it up as a more regular thing. And yes, I totally need some proper old-fashioned white skates.

Naturally a circle skirt was the only option - I did have visions of twirling around in pirouettes on the ice, but I think that might require a little more practice. The Scandinavian-style sweater completed the classic 40s/50s ice skating look (a number of spectators agreed - I received compliments on my outfit and was told I looked the part). Ooh and check out my faux fur cuffs, they were a Christmas present from mother, aren't they fab?

Yes, I'm fulfilling my collection of must-have bags - this is the telephone cord purse Matin got me for my birthday - I'm living the dream, ladies!

Wool beret, charity shop; Pashmina, gift from mother; Brooch, a gift from my sister many years ago; Necklace, Squirrel Antiques; Wool sweater, charity shop; 1950s circle skirt, etsy; Gloves, Spitalfields vintage fair; Faux fur cuffs, Christmas gift; Handbag, birthday present from Matin; Tights, can't remember; Novelty socks, a Christmas gift from last year; Shoes, Marks & Spencer.

So here's to 2013, and I'm starting as I mean to go on - my biggest resolution is to get out more and enjoy what London has to offer. And take up ice-skating.

  1. What a sweet outfit! I would love to go ice skating, but problems are that I am not good at it and I don't have skates.. Your sweater is so adorable, very scandinavian indeed!

  2. I love your outfit! I do ice-skating sometimes and do have some very adorable 60's white skates... but I want red ones, too! In fact my daughter-in-law's modern skates are much better for actual skating, but mine are cuter ;)

  5. How delicious do you look? And skating at Hampton Court, oh my, envy, envy! I always wanted to skate, but such things don't exist where I come from, tried it once very briefly and fell over a lot but never got the chance again.

  11. You look FABULOUS! I can definitely see why you got so many compliments! And ice-skating at Hampton Court looks amazing - the rink looks really big, or is an optical illusion of the first photo? I went to the Tower of London a couple of years ago and it felt a wee bit small - although that might also be because, in my head, I was envisaging that the whole moat would be one big ice rink... It wasn't... Even if the photo makes Hampton Court look bigger than it is, it still looks wonderfully free of crowds - another drawback I found of the Tower. Hmm, you've definitely sold it to me!

    1. I think it's the same size as the Tower of London rink - it's run by the same people. It was fairly crowded - I think our session was sold out - but if you're able to go in the day on a working day it would probably be quieter (and it's slightly cheaper)

    2. If only I could go on a working day. All my leave is used up for the year though... And it would far too cheeky for me to call in sick and then go ice-skating, of all activities! Well, I'm impressed that you managed to make it look so quiet and uncrowded in that first picture - definitely a good skill for a blogger to have when it comes to taking outfit pictures.

    3. Haha, I sneakily waited on the ice when they called the end of the session so I'd be about the last one to leave and could get Matin to snap a nice clear photo!

    1. I actually initially wanted to go to Somerset House - but they were fully booked for New Year's Day - in the end I'm quite glad we went to Hampton Court, it was lovely.

  15. This just the most splendidly sweet skating outfit ever! I adore the socks over your white tights (I never remember to do that - perhaps this awesome outfit will be enough to job my memory throughout the rest of the winter), the quilted skirt, the wintry sweater, the cord bag - all of it!

  18. Beautiful! And what a splendid skating outfit. I absolutely adore the fur cuffs in particular! I feel like I've seen women's white figure skates in thrift shops at least a few times around here, and we hardly have winter in California! I do miss ice skating, though... perhaps I should go before winter ends/

  19. Absolutely fabulous! This is far better than any skating outfit you're likely to see anyone wearing anyway! Just love it. And aren't those fur cuffs fantastic, what a great gift!
