{Style Inspiration} Colourful Stockings

Yes, Style Inspiration Sundays are back! This week I thought I'd introduce a lingerie fad which increased in popularity over the 1950s: coloured stockings. It started in the early 50s with novelty 'coloured seam' stockings, before developing into a trend for tinted nylons to match one's outfit colours.

  1. Great selection of adverts. Love the Chemistrand nylon one.

  2. Love these. I quite like coloured tights every now and then. Unfortunately anything sheer ends up wrecked almost as soon as I put them on, it's awful, I can just never manage not to put my nails through them! Stockings would probably be better as you don't have to haul at them...what an elegant picture that conjures up, doesn't it? haha....in the same way but I always find they are far too long for me or if shorter, too short and I have the horrible feeling they are somewhere about my knees. There MUST be a solution to this, surely.

  3. Splendid array of coloured vintage hose. I think that it can be all too easy (understandably) to (by and large) only associate nude and beige stockings and nylons with the 40s and 50s, yet colours (and black) were by no means unknown, too, as this beautifully showcases. It's great reminder to sport more coloured stockings with my 50s looks - thank you, dear gal!

  4. I love coloured and novelty tights and stockings. They add that extra 'style touch' to a plain skirt or dress.

  5. Wow! I didn't know coloured stockings dated back to the fifties. I wish I could find some. I have always thought it was only nude and flesh toned back then. Lovely ads. :)

  6. I love the flower tone ad! What Katie Did just came out with pink and chocolate seams, which I love. I'd love to find some navy seams with a nude stocking. It's those little details that really make things special

  7. I wish you could get some of these delicate colours nowdays, it is hard enough to find navy anymore, and then they are the opaque ones.

  8. oh - you are back! i almost missed it!
in my youth in the GDR we only had skin tones in stockings and tights. this was in the 80´s! we tried to dye them black but they came out blue and brittle. but then i find out that in the carnival season you could buy fishnet tights in white, red and black. so i wore fishnets - some strange staring included :-)
i love the drawing in the "cameo" ad.
